Iran Protests Intensify with Rising Death Toll, Arrests
HRANA reported that 10,721 individuals have been detained as the unrest entered its 16th day nationwide. The organization also highlighted that Iran has been under a near-total internet shutdown for more than 100 hours.
The protests erupted late last month, beginning on Dec. 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, triggered by the sharp decline of the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions. The demonstrations quickly spread to multiple other cities.
Iranian authorities have accused the US and Israel of supporting what they call “armed rioters,” who they claim have carried out violent incidents in public areas across the country.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that his administration is closely observing developments in Iran and is weighing "very strong options" as the casualty count continues to rise. "We'll make a determination," Trump said, noting he has been receiving hourly updates on the situation, though he did not specify when, where, or how the US might respond.
